Chained to the Bench

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NDuBvVhQbE

This short video performance is about a drunk driving accident which occurred a little more than a year ago. I was involved as a pedestrian and was hit about 45 mph by a Chevy SUV. It was more than a miracle to myself to walk away with a concussion among some bumps and bruises which go away, and at that point I thought to myself how much more I had to live for. I think about it everyday, and its definitely important for each person to count their blessings each day. While I was in the back of the ambulance I thought everything that I worked so hard to achieve was just taken away from me, without any warning. This performance exemplifies how I am literally chained to the bench, as the accident took away a lot from my lacrosse career, and it should have taken more than that from what the Doctor told me in the emergency room. I am holding a sign, which is actually written on the back of my resume, for a job which I hoped to pursue after graduation, I wrote on the back my birthday, and the date of the accident. I also wrote a few brief notable thoughts about my family and personal life to show people the importance of the drunk driving issue, I was trying to get across the idea of what someone could be potentially taking away if they choose to drive drunk. I enjoyed this piece, even though I got a couple weird looks. However, I did notice people reading the sign and understanding the cause as I sat patiently waiting for the bus, but ultimately I could have been chained for life.

"Surrealism"

Surrealism is a 20th century literary and artistic movement. Imagination and artists would try and portray images of the subconscious mind. Dream elements for example would be added to different pieces of work, making various art pieces complex and interesting.

"Strange Beauty of Historic Computers"

This article appealed to me in many ways. It shows the history of computers and how much our world has advanced throughout the ages. It was quite interesting seeing pictures of computers that would take up entire rooms such as IBM's first computer. Also, I noticed how many of the computers influenced designs for future computers. It was hard to believe that a computer known as the "The Witch" weighed over 2.5 metric tons!

"Kids; Learn to Code" -Zuckerberg/Gates

I think this article and video clips were very interesting. Zuckerberg and Gates are right in the points they make urging kids to get computer experience and study computer programming. People dont understand how important computer technology is to our society, and when kids start early who knows the possibilities people could discover!

Video Game Violence

Violence in video games is always under constant debate. Do video games really promote and influence violence in young adults? With games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, and Halo players feel they have alot of control, superhuman powers. This feeling of power could definitely have some influence in reality for some players and could influence them to make real life decisions in the real world. Recently in the news their has been alot of talk about the influence of video games because of the behavior of young teens and shootings. Obviously gun control comes into play, but the violence in video games just gives them the ideas. Children are being exposed to violent games at younger ages now, and their minds are like sponges. When they see these characters in movies, video games, etc. than they could sometimes feel the need to act out on it in real life.

Who was Alan Turing?

Alan Turing was born in London, England. He was considered by many to be the "Father" of the computer. He worked as a code breaker during WWII in Bletchley, Park the GCCS wartime station. Turing then moved back to London in the 1940's for the National Physical Lab and there he created a blueprint for a Automatic Computing Engine and he was the lead designer. Although his engine was never completed, his model was used by many and influenced the creation of English Electric DEUCE, or the first personal computer. Turing went on to hold high position in the computing labratory at University of Manchester.

DMT

DMT is not a new drug, but it has been said to have some trippy effects to the human mind. Altering a persons perception to the point of hallucination. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grcqs9cDuN8 Joe Rogan talks about this drug more in depth. DMT is found naturally in the brain and plays an important role in thought processing, dreaming and near-death experiences, as well as meditation and out-of-body experiences such as astral-projection. This chemical reacts with the one in your brain to release it at a concsious state of mind, therefore people almost go into some sort of sleep dream, while they are really awake.

Singing in the Rain

"A Clockwork Orange": Alex (Malcom McDowell) performs the song "Singing In the Rain" in the movie. Although he only sings the first couple lyrics but not the rest of this song. The meaning behind this song in the movie could be the rest of the lyrics dont make sense to his actual life as it his a happy song,
"What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again!
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above,
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love!"

It could be forshadowing the unfortunate event that is going to happen to the lady in this scene, but this characters actions just arent making sense. The film could be taking ideas from things that are happening around the world during the time period. from 1950-1970 the world faced communism, McCarthyism which is the practice of accusations, disloyalty, and treason. Also, Malcom-X, Brown V. Board of Education which is a time for African Americans rights, therefore people didnt have alot of trust in the American Government and people were free to do what they wanted. This movie could explain the story of people doing their own thing, with little to no liability as there was much war and our world was a mess with events such as the Cuban Missle Crisis, Korean War, and the rights of people.

Minstrel Shows

The Minstrel Shows I found quite interesting. I am not one who find this kind of music, dance, acting, etc. quite entertaining but recently its sparked my interest as I learn about how all of this influences modern industry. The minstrel shows were found racist as white people would paint their faces black to be like african americans. The writers of the shows said that the dances were authentically black and once the white actors moved onto Vaudeville, the African-Americans filled in the shows.

My name is Bobby Benditt, I am a Sports Management Major and would like to focus on the marketing of sport industry. I thought this class (art and technology) would really help with my major allowing me to expand on some marketing techniques, and really understand how art comes into play with marketing.
